Retaining Wall Blocks
Retaining Walls are often used to leval a yard or to prevent erosion on a hillside. In a flat yard, you can build a low retaining wall and fill in behind it to create a raised planting bed. Terraced retaining walls work well on steep hillsides. Two or more short retaining walls are easier to install and more stable than a single, tall retaining wall. Construct the terraces so each wall is no taller than three feet. While retaining walls can be built from many materials, including wood timbers and natural stones, interlocking concrete blocks have become a very popular choice. Typically made from concrete, retaining wall blocks are rather inexpensive, very durable, and easy to install. Several styles of interlocking block are available at building centers and at your local landscaping supply yard. Most types have a split-face finish that combines the rough texture of cut stone with the uniform shape and size of concrete blocks. Some have cast flanges or tongue and grooves to create a locking system that holds the retaining wall together. Other types do not interlock, but have flat surfaces that need to be bonded with landscaping stone adhesive. Some older styles relied on nylon pins that fit into cast holes in the blocks to add strength and assist in alignment. This type of system is rarely used today. Interlocking wall blocks can weigh up to 80 lbs. each, so its a good idea to have helpers when building a retaining wall.
Structural features for all retaining walls include: a compactable gravel subbase to make a solid footing for the wall, crushed stone backfill and perforated drain pipe to improve drainage behind the wall, and landscape fabric to keep loose soil from washing into and clogging the gravel backfill. When building retaining walls, pay close attention to drainage. Your wall can be damaged if water saturates the soil behind it, so make sure you include the proper drainage gravel and drain tile. You may need to dig a drainage swale before building in low lying areas. Be sure to check you local codes for maximum wall height restrictions and for minimum property line setback. Also have your public utility company visit your property to flag any utility lines that are in or near the project area.

Patio Landscaping
Creating a patio for the first time can be an exciting experience for any home owner, given to the touch of creativity that can expand through the horizon. Of course the labor and cost would be something secondary, it would be a enriching experience, thus a few patio landscaping ideas should be in place.
First off is to know what kind of theme should be planned out, and this would only determine on where the homeowner is located. Patios are meant to be a place to relax outdoors, and what better way is to set the mood depending on the scenery. The material involve should be both aesthetically and functional, thus allowing the patio to be sturdy as well as good to look at.
When choosing an area for a patio, it would be best to start at a flat area of land. Of course it would be better for some if the patio is elevated, depending if the land has such a slope, otherwise a good load of digging, or just hiring a contractor would be in order. Better to just start with the basics for patio landscaping ideas. Common materials would be using bricks, along with some colorful stones to achieve the desired Tuscan-like effect. And with a little detailed work like adding a floral design on the patio cover would be an added plus to bring out it’s natural aura.
Plants are the main reason why just about every homeowner would want to create some patio landscaping ideas, and it would be best to know what sort of plants would be needed. Perennials would be best since they can last much longer even if it’s already passed the season. Having a few annual plants, such as flowers and the like would spruce up the patio. A manicured lawn or being surrounded by trees would be a good start when it comes to flora. Other ways when it comes to patio landscaping would be water, and the more the merrier like digging a small pond or a miniature waterfall for an added effect.
As for theme, there are practically dozens of ways that would be suitable for any American home Pool patios are the most common, yet the most easily sought after for those who want to have a place after taking a dip during the summer days. Just having a patio cover that also extends a little above a pool would be inviting for those who want to relax at the edge of the pool. Added with a few more plants surrounding the pool would definitely boost the desirability factor of the patio.
Most modern patios would also involve a bit of fusion that may come from different regions of the world. While some would prefer being original, others would allow something like having a few rocks that surround the patio, or better yet some terra cotta tiles that is similar in some parts to give it a more western feel.
In a way, patio landscaping ideas are no different from decorating a house, only limited to the number of things that are not needed outdoors, like a wide screen HDTV. Regardless, the main point of patio landscaping is to make sure the place is attuned to nature, giving a more relaxed feeling as the homeowner can count the minutes away with a peace of mind.

Stone Fire Pit
A stone fire pit makes a wonderful focal point for backyard gatherings. Many local codes within Macomb and Oakland County require that the fire pit area be at least 20 feet from the house. This should include the surrounding circular area that can be outfitted with chairs, benches, and/or brick seating walls. Stone fire pits can be dressed with several different materials such as retaining wall blocks, flagstone, garden wall stones, and brick pavers to create a firebreak between the stone fire pit and surrounding structures. For safety concerns, fire pits should only be installed on ground level. When constructing a fire pit out of any stone material, be sure to set the stones on a solid foundation such as compacted gravel or a cement footing. It is recommended to prepare your seating area at the same time as your fire pit to ensure both areas are set at the same level. Most cities such as Rochester Hills, Shelby Township, Macomb, Oakland Township, and Sterling Heights Michigan have regulations for the maximum size of a stone fire pit. It is recommended to check the city codes in which you live to avoid any violation issues. Some cities may also require a permit each time you use your stone fire pit, or at least notify your local fire department so responders aren’t dispatched unnecessarily.
Here are a few tips to consider once you are ready to build a stone fire pit:
- Make sure there are no bans or restrictions in effect.
- Evaluate wind conditions. Do not build a stone fire pit where winds are heavy, this can be very dangerous, and uncomfortable when gathering around.
- Keep a shovel, sand and a supply of water nearby. A fire extinguisher is also recommended.
- Extinguish the fire with water nearby and do not leave unattended until it is cold to a touch.
Basics of Landscape Design
In landscaping, the success of your project not only depends on how beautiful the plants are that you are planning to include, but also knowing the principles of landscape design. Understanding landscaping design and its principles is a very important factor that you have to keep in mind if you want to see your garden beautifully landscaped.
Here are the basic principles that you have to remember when choosing your landscaping design;
Harmony – This is the main factor that you have to think about in a landscape design. You can do this by grouping alike garden elements together; including plants, garden decorations or lights. Try to create a big, single design out of the groups of plants or decors. You can group together elements with the same height, colors, textures and sizes.
Balance – If your landscaping design has balance, you can expect a great output. Anything with balance or equality can be very beautiful. Example of this is symmetrical balance and asymmetrical balance:
• Symmetrical – with equal space and wherein garden elements match this space.
• Asymmetrical – this is a mix of similar elements in one side and different elements on the other.
Simplicity – this is a very common principle in most art and design. And if you’re just beginning to get the hang of landscaping, this is the best principle that you could follow. In this case, you can opt for simple elements like choosing few colors and plants as well as other decorations and lights.
Color – Of course, all garden will not be as beautiful as they are without color. Color is the one that brings life to everything that you have in your garden. You can apply some color principles in your garden landscape such as choosing colors that make things look closer. In this case, the colors reds, oranges and yellows are perfect.
If you want, you can opt for colors which give you cool feeling like blues, greens and pastel colors. These colors make object look farther. Don’t forget to include background colors such as blacks, whites and greys. They are the colors that best compliments the bright colors of your garden.
Lines – choosing the line pattern wherein you will arrange your plants and garden decors is important. This is where the flow and contour of your garden depends.
Transition – in whatever you do, transition should be gradual and should look natural so you won’t experience any bugging hassles. This is also true with landscaping design. Natural transition is necessary in your landscape design because any abrupt or radical changes in the design will not look good. Like, if you are planting plants with different height; you should not plant a taller plan immediately beside a small plant. It would look much better to plant mid-sized plants in between them.
Proportion – when planning your landscaping design, it is best to organize your garden elements in relation to the size, color and types. This way, your garden will not look like it was all mixed up without proper planning.
These are just some of the principles that you have to think about regarding your landscaping designs. And you have to keep in mind that these are in no way absolute. You can still add up a thing or two and innovate most of these principles depending on what you prefer.
It is actually best to apply your own creativity when planning for landscaping design.
